Elements, Form, Life
As a zoologist and artist, I have been continuously torn between rigidity and freedom. I am now realising, however, how these two poles don’t have to be exclusive from each other but can actually come together, enhancing my appreciation of the natural world.
I love how nature creates order out of potentially random elements. Individual pieces (right down to a cellular level) arranged in a specific manner to create form. Life, however, is the final step, which leaves us in awe.
This is perhaps why I am so drawn to zebras, as visually they are the perfect example of a form made up of many separate elements. They are also life to the full extent of complexity – from unique individual characters (with attitude) to complex social groups.
This art work is my first attempt to portray the three steps:
Element – form – life.
